Dear Staff at Hyperbaric Medicine,
My daughter Jill has completed 38 hyperbaric oxygen treatments and has already shown signs of progress. She has made moderate improvement in her fine motor skills in her left hand; she can hold a spoon, string, cord, crayon, and marker and can use the bed controls and elevator buttons. As for her gross motor skills, there was minimal improvement as her spasticity is very severe. Still, some small changes were noted at times, and other times there was tightness. She does have better trunk and neck control.
Jill can now wash her own face, brush her teeth and use lipstick, chap stick, comb her hair (all with her left hand) and can feed herself, too.
Jill has had significant improvement with cognition. She follows all directions given and can respond to all questions and is now able to initiate questions, too. Furthermore, she is interacting in group settings. Jill can mouth all words with minimal sound. The feed test shows no problems with her voice box and no damage to the chords - limited sound may be due to brain stem injury.
Jill has significant improvement in her mood. She appears more “upbeat” and smiles on her own and when asked to change expression, she can go from sad to mad, and sour to happy. She will tear and facial grimace with pain and will tell you what is wrong. She is much more alert and even people who haven’t seen her in a while comment on how alert she looks. Her attention span is also getting better. She has mostly full comprehension and although it may take up to 15 seconds, she will respond to other individuals and most of the time it takes her only 1-2 seconds.
We noticed that between 10-20 treatments, Jill had better head and neck control and from 20-38 treatments we saw improvements in her alertness, expressions, interaction, and memory. During her rest period from HBOT, we have still seen Jill’s swallowing improve, along with a continuing increase in her alertness and her motor skills.
Jill is ready to begin more treatments in January and we hope that she will continue to improve. I (Jill’s mom) have only the utmost respect for the staff at Hyperbaric Medicine of New York...the kindness and caring is beyond any job requirement or expectation. The office staff is efficient and helpful. I am looking forward to Jill resuming her treatments and recommend it to all others as well.
Thank you,
Jill’s mother
